![]() The project was put on hold by NCDOT from 2019 to 2021along with most others across the state. ![]() In 2019, Section C (eastern end) was added to the project in the STIP, and planning and environmental reviews began. In 2018 an Express Design Feasibility Study looking at widening the entire corridor to 4 or 5 lanes was prepared for all three sections. Sections A (western end) and B (middle portion) were officially approved for state funding in the 2017-2028 State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP) and the project was renumbered to TIP R-5766. R-3414 and dividing the project into three sections – A, B and C). In 2014, PTRPO ranked the project 4 out of 15 in terms of regional importance (referring to it as TIP No. 65/87 has been identified in various studies and transportation and land use plans prepared by NCDOT, Piedmont Triad Regional Planning Organization (PTRPO) and Rockingham County dating as far back as 1997. The project is needed to: improve capacity reduce congestion, improve multi-modal access and connectivity, and improve safety by realigning some intersections and adding traffic signals. Other improvements include realigning and adding traffic signals at the Rockingham High School driveway / Peach Tree Road and Vance Street Extension / Gibbs Road intersections. The project will widen the roadway, add turn lanes, improve intersections and add bike and pedestrian facilities in an area with several schools, a park, community college, courthouse and several government centers.
